Crash on South Ninth Street deadly for pedestrian

A 59-year-old Modesto man was killed Tuesday evening, Dec. 10 when he was struck by a car on South Ninth Street in south Modesto.

At approximately 6:43 p.m., the California Highway Patrol was notified of the collision just south of River Road. Emergency personnel arrived and located a deceased man lying in the road and a 2012 Fiat sedan with collision damage.

According to CHP investigators, Mireya Perez, 47, of Modesto, was driving southbound on S. 9th Street in the number one lane and unable to avoid hitting the victim who was lying in the roadway. It is unknown if the man had been previously struck by another vehicle or why he was in the road.

Perez remained on scene and was determined not to be under the influence.

Traffic was detoured around the crash site while law enforcement investigated the scene.
