Two Hughson residents were involved in a deadly Chowchilla crash that claimed the life of a 25-year-old Oakland resident on Thursday.

The California Highway Patrol said that the dead man was a passenger in a 2012 Kia driven by Librado A. Buenrostro, 26, of Oakland, who was allegedly intoxicated during the 9 a.m. crash. The CHP said Buenrostro was driving a red Kia Optima westbound on Highway 152 near Road 11 at a high rate of speed. In his car were two men and three females. Witnesses said Buenrostro was reaching speeds of up to 90 mph and passing vehicles on the right shoulder before he clipped the rear of a white 2012 Kia Optima and lost control and overturned several times.

Also in the car were Hughson passengers K. Galvez, 18, and Monique Guzman, 16, who were both taken to Saint Agnes for treatment of injuries. Also hurt were Jesus Nunez, 25, of Oakland, and Alejandra Gonzalez, 19, of Oakland, both passengers of Buenrostro's. They were airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno.

The driver of the white Kia, Jason Wells, was not injured.
The CHP said that none of the occupants of Buenrostro's car were wearing seat belts.

Buenrostro was transported to Mercy Community Hospital in Merced for minor injuries and later booked into the Madera County Jail on charges of felony driving under the influence, manslaughter with gross negligence while intoxicated, and child endangerment.
