Editor, Ceres Courier,
I was infuriated after reading the potential ban on all smartphones in TK-12 California schools. Considering the state of California has the highest amount of school shootings in the country since 1966, why would Gov. Gavin Newsom ban a device that has the potential to alert authorities during an active shooter event?
Instead of banning potential life-saving devices, Newsom should focus more on pushing the curriculum of educating teens about the dangers of smartphones. This would teach the young minds of California that instead of putting a Band-Aid over a bullet hole, we should get to the root cause of a problem.
If we are truly worried about the children, we would protect them from being attacked in class, while also further educating them and preparing them to handle the dangers of the phones that they will be on as soon as they’re home.
