Ceres High’s and Central Valley’s crosstown-rival track and field programs faced off during the final week of the Western Athletic Conference regular season.
Ceres High’s boys team clinched its second straight WAC title with a 109-31 victory against Central Valley on April 22 at CUSD Stadium.
“It’s very special due to the fact (retiring) coach Brett Johnson is part of this run,” Bulldogs’ first-year leader Paul Smith said. “He’s built this program.”
“Coach Johnson is a Ceres legend,” Hawks’ first-year head coach/former Bulldog multi-sport athlete Luis Calderon stated. “He means a lot to me. I looked up to him in high school. He was my coach and health teacher. He helped me grow. A lot of the traits he taught me, I’m using them to this day. He’s an inspiring person. I owe him a lot.”
The Bulldogs compiled a 7-0 record versus league competition this season.
The Hawks placed sixth in the WAC standings with a 2-5 mark.
“Great competition breeds great performances,” Smith said.
