Osvaldo Cisneros, Silas Rodriguez, Avori Ortega, Roman Parodi, Simar Malhi and Sahib Patter represented Central Valley’s boys tennis program at the Western Athletic Conference Championships last week at Johansen High School.
Cisneros, Rodriguez, Ortega and Parodi reached the finals of the WAC Doubles Tournament.
“The guys worked hard all year,” Hawks’ head coach Nimrat Chahal said. “It’s nice to see that pay off in this way. All four players played tremendous throughout the tournament and the finish was well-deserved.”
Cisneros and Rodriguez made history by becoming Central Valley’s first-ever boys doubles champions.
“We’ve had (doubles) teams place second in the past,” Chahal said. “But this is the first time we won the tournament.”
Cisneros and Rodriguez rallied for a 3-6, 6-1, 10-8 victory over Ortega and Parodi in the finals.
Cisneros and Rodriguez compiled a 4-0 record at the WAC doubles tournament.
“They had a phenomenal tournament,” Chahal said. “They were unseeded and beat not only the first seed but also the second and third seeds en route to winning the tournament. I think their resilience was a big reason they won. They had great communication throughout the tournament and in doubles it’s essential you and your partner are on the same page. It was a first for both of them playing together and they handled it well.”
Ortega and Parodi won three of four matches on their way to a runner-up finish at the league finals.
“Avori and Roman played well enough to win the tournament,” Chahal said.
Malhi and Patter compiled a 1-1 record at the doubles tourney.
Cisneros, Rodriguez, Ortega and Parodi all qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division-II Doubles Tournament.
Cisneros, Ortega and Parodi also competed at the WAC Singles Tournament this past week.
Cisneros compiled a 1-1 record.
He prevailed 6-1, 6-0 against Pacheco’s Jayden Caballero in the opening round.
He lost 6-1, 6-1 to Livingston’s Vincent Jiang in the second round.
“After seeing the draw, I think Ozzie met expectations,” Chahal said. “He played the league MVP in the second round and competed well with him. We all had a feeling Ozzie would win the first-round matchup.”
Ortega lost 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 to Johansen’s Caden Johnson in the first round of the conference singles tournament.
“Avori played well,” Chahal said. “We both believed he would win his matchup but a slow start really hurt him. He still fought his way back and made it a close match.”
Parodi lost 6-3, 6-4 to Beyer’s Chase Monjure in the opening round.
“Roman played well but had a tough draw in the first round,” Chahal said. “His match was very competitive. He just couldn’t close out some close games.”
