Mailboxes, utility pole casualties in solo car crash

A 21-year driver escaped uninjured in a solo crash that took out mailboxes and a wooden utility pole on Friday afternoon.

The California Highway Patrol said the crash occurred at 3:15 p.m. when Ruby Vega was driving her 1998 Honda Accord eastbound on Roeding Road just west of Faith Home Road. Vega swerved to avoid a branch of about an inch in diameter that was lying in her lane. As her wheels went off the southern edge of the pavement, she overcorrected and lost control and plowed into mailboxes, chain-link fences and the power pole.

Roeding Road was closed to through traffic for a few hours while crews replaced the damaged pole.
