A man wearing dark clothing and standing or walking in the slow lane of southbound Mitchell Road near the Modesto Airport was struck by a car and sustained major injuries on Sunday evening.

Dalton Shoup, 20, of Modesto, was struck at 10:45 p.m. by the front of a 2003 Hyundai driven by Steve Gonzales, also 20 and from Modesto. Shoup was rushed to Memorial Medical Center.

Gonzales told the California Highway Patrol that he did not see Shoup in time to avoid hitting him.

The crash occurred just north of the Mitchell/Finch road intersection.
