Memorial set for ex chief Pete Peterson

A public memorial service has been set for 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 20 for former Ceres Police Chief Pete Peterson who died at age 77 last month of cancer.

The memorial will be held at Calvary Chapel, 4300 American Ave., north of Pelandale Avenue, Modesto.

Peterson served as police chief in Ceres from 1983 to 1999. He was replaced by Art deWerk.

Born Nov. 28, 1937 in Paxton, Ill., Gail W. "Pete" Peterson went into law enforcement in the late 1950s as a reserve officer for the Newport Beach Police Department. Following a brief stint there, he moved to the Laguna Beach department and then to the city of Orange where he was a motor cop.
