A grinding head-on crash on Keyes Road at Mountain View Road resulted in the death of a 56-year-old Turlock female driver Friday morning.

The crash occurred at 6:21 a.m. when Sukhjit Dhaliwal failed to stop her Toyota Corolla at the stop sign at southbound Mountain View Road and entered Keyes Road where it was broadsided by a westbound tractor-trailer rig. The CHP dispatch log initially indicated that the crash was head-on but that turned out not the case, said a spokesman with the Modesto CHP office. Avtar Thiara, a 58-year-old Turlock woman who was riding in the front passenger seat of the Toyota, survived and was rushed to the hospital with complaints of pain.

The impact sent the Mac tractor and trailer filled with rolled corn grain onto the passenger side and sliding into the orchard on the south side of the road. Its driver, Larry Pearson, 65, of Atwater, was taken to the hospital for moderate injuries.

First-responders from Keyes, Hughson and Denair fire departments and American Medical Response ambulance were the first to respond to the incident.

California Highway Patrol officers are investigating the scene.

The crash shut down Keyes Road for hours for the cleanup, which included a hazardous materials cleanup of the engine oil that leaked from the truck onto the orchard floor.

The intersection has been the scene of a number of serious and deadly crashes in recent years. Friday’s crash renewed calls on social media for the county to add a signal light or stop sign at that location.
