Preparations made for Memorial Day
FLAG REPAIR
Steve Whitney, a member of the American Legion post in Ceres, repairs an American flags in preparation for this years Memorial Day event planned for Monday, May 26 at Ceres Memorial Park.

Memorial Day events in Ceres start at 6 a.m. Monday with the raising of an estimated 150 American flags to line the road paths in the Ceres cemetery.

A ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. at the cemetery and will include Congressman Jeff Denham and other speakers paying tribute to fallen heroes. The playing of taps will be part of the ceremony. The flags will be removed at 5 p.m. The public is invited to assist with the raising and retiring of the flags at the cemetery. Steve Whitney, a member of the American Legion post in Ceres,  said all of the flags have been donated by families of departed veterans with some of them dating back to the days of 48 stars.

The Ladies VFW Auxiliary will be putting small flags on veterans' graves at the Ceres Memorial Cemetery, 1801 E Whitmore Ave., Ceres, on Saturday, May 24 at 10 a.m. The group can use the help of anyone in the community who would like to help. The auxiliary is especially in need of assistance of any family members of veterans who are buried without a military headstone since they have no way of knowing who they served. Flags will be picked up on Monday, May 26, at 4:30 p.m. For more information, contact Auxiliary president Denise Lykes at 996-7394.
