The smell of barbecued meat will be wafting in the air along with the sounds of live music on the banks of the Tuolumne River on Saturday, Aug. 23 for the first annual "Smoke on the River" event. The Ceres Chamber of Commerce is hosting the barbecue challenge and music festival at the Tuolumne River Lodge, 2429 River Road.

"We're really excited about this," said Chamber of Commerce president Renee Ledbetter. "We have had contestants submit their applications from as Los Angeles to compete in this. They'll be vying for the Best of the West team for Ceres and so we're encouraging people to participate if they are backyard barbecuers or if they really take it serious to the point where they're looking at it for a profession."

The Chamber is charging $100 for an individual or team to compete in the barbecue contest. All rules and applications are available on the Chamber website, www.cereschamber.com.

The event will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and tickets are $10 per person if purchased in advance and $20 per person at the gate.

Remedy and the Black Rose Band will be among those performing.

Although the event is not a Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned event, the following rules are derived from the KCBS Rule Book and have been modified for this event. All Judges will be KCBS CBJ's or experienced BBQ Judges and/or trained by a Master KCBS Certified BBQ Judge.
Judges will follow KCBS CBJ scoring guidelines.
