A funeral Mass was held Tuesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Hughson for Alpha "Mae" Soares, 82, of Hughson. She died March 29, 2011 at the Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson.

Born Feb. 15, 1929 in Ada, Okla., to Charles and Ethel Wade, Mae was the oldest of seven children. She moved with her family to the Central Valley in the early 1940s, eventually moving to Hughson where Mae met and married Ralph Soares. She worked with her husband on the family dairy. She often carried milk cans, cleaning the milk house, or driving the tractor. They later farmed almonds. A talented seamstress, Mae started her own upholstery business in the early 1970s.

She leaves behind five children, Ralph Michael Soares of Hughson, Frank Soares of Ceres, Mark Soares and Ken Soares, both of Hughson, and Carol Shepard of Shiocton, Wisc.; her sister, Betty Ruhl; her brother, Don Wade of Oklahoma; and 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband Ralph, daughter Patricia "Patsy" Edwards, her parents, sisters Ruby and Joann, brothers Chuck and Bill, and grandson Preston Soares.
