A funeral service was held Monday at the Pentecostal Church of God for Alta Leona Eddings Spears, 86, of Hughson. She died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2005 at Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock.

Burial was at Lakewood Memorial Park under the direction of the Colonial Chapel of Franklin & Downs.

Born Sept. 10, 1918, Mrs. Spears was a native of Arkansas and had lived in Hughson since 1943. She worked in the food processing industry for 35 years; she retired from Tri Valley Growers as a floor lady. Mrs. Spears belonged to Teamsters union Local 748. She enjoyed her yard and gardening, as well as crocheting and other crafts. Mrs. Spears was a member of the Pentecostal Church of God.

She leaves behind three children, LeRoy Spears of Powers, Ore., Ada Elam of Hughson and Leon Spears of Modesto; her brother, Talmage Eddings of Arkansas; her sister, Alma Spears of Arkansas; and 12 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and 14great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virlon Spears.
