Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Lakewood Funeral Home for Arvel L. Spears, 84, of Hughson. He died Sept. 24, 2009.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at Lakewood Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park.

Born Oct. 14, 1924 in Western Grove, Ark., to Otto and Charlotte Spears, Arvel joined the Army in 1943. He served his country in Europe, Southeast Asia, and Central America during World War II. He returned home and married Dorothy Poynter in 1946. They had two sons Steven and Edward. She preceded him in death after 38 years of marriage. Arvel then married Nadine Thompson in 1987. Arvel retired from Stanislaus County Public Works Department. Arvel enjoyed traveling, fishing and hunting.

He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Nadine Spears of Hughson; his sons, Steven Spears and Edward Spears, and Robert Thompson and Gary Thompson; six brothers; three sisters; and 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
