A graveside service was held on Tuesday at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward for Carl Garrett Fontan, 84, of Hughson. He died Oct. 27, 2009 at the Samaritan Village in Hughson.

Grissom's Chapel & Mortuary in San Lorenzo was in charge of arrangements.

Born Nov. 19, 1924 in Oakland to Alvin and Lydia Fontan, Carl attended Oakland public schools, graduating from Roosevelt High in 1942. While in school, he worked at the Oakland Tribune where he received numerous awards and attained "master dealer" status. After briefly attending San Francisco State College, he enlisted in the Navy and served aboard the USS Wyoming. Upon being honorably discharged, he married Betty Jane Thomas of Rochester, N.Y., and returned to Oakland. He worked for T&L Dental Lab and then Diablo Dental Lab in Walnut Creek. He eventually became co-owner of the lab. He retired in 1999.

He leaves behind his children, Doug Fontan of Modesto, Amy Fontan Sheehan of Jeffersonville, Ind., and Elizabeth Fontan of Las Vegas, Nev.; his sister, Betty Weed of Hanford; his grandchildren, Matthew Hall of Greenville, Ind., Laura Fontan of Santa Rosa and Genevieve Fontan of San Francisco; and great-grandchildren, Clifford and Carl Dixon, and Taylor and Payton Hall. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jane Fontan.
