A chapel service was held Friday at Lakewood Funeral Home for Charles "Jay" Wells, 74, of Modesto. He died peacefully on April 26, 2010, surrounded by family members.

Born Feb. 16, 1936 in Bakoshe, Okla., Jay moved to California in 1941. He graduated from Ceres High School in 1954 and then served in the Air Force from 1958 to 1962. Mr. Wells worked for Tri Valley Growers Plant #2 for 33 years. Charles started Jay's Trophy Shop in 1981 and developed it over the next 21 years. He was a member of the Modesto Racing Pigeon Club and Moose Lodge #1608 of Modesto.

He leaves behind his wife, Paula Wells of Modesto; former wife Delores Moore; two children, Chuck Wells and Cathy Marie (Wells) Hale; his step-daughter, Jeanette Ables; three step-sons, Brian Branch, Dale Branch, Darren Branch; two sisters, Martha Tramel, Nancy Haneline; three grandchildren, Jason Hale, Brian Hale and Timothy Hale; four step-grandchildren, Stephanie, Ricky, Caddie, and Mason; one great-grandchild and one step-great-grandchild, Makayla. He was preceded in death by daughter, Kelly Lynn Wells and sister Donia Coffey.
