A funeral service was held Thursday at Ceres Memorial Park for Darwin Lawrence Borges, 75, of Ceres. He died Oct. 23, 2009 at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.

Born Dec. 4, 1933, Darwin was well known for his dedication, loving personality, and hard work in the community. He graduated from Modesto Junior College in 1954, worked for Modesto Welding and Tank Works for nearly 30 years, and for Ceres Cemetery where he served as superintendent for 17 years. Mr. Borges was active in the Ceres community, having served as a volunteer fire chief for 30 years. He also assisted in organizing the Ceres Youth Baseball League in 1962. Darwin also helped to grow the Ceres Adult Athletic Association in 1978, and continued to umpire softball until 2001.

He leaves behind his wife of 52 years, JoAnne Borges of Ceres; his six children; his brother, Alfred A. Borges of Turlock; and 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Remembrances may be sent to the Ceres Fire Department.
