Services were held at the Holy Eucharist Church in Corralito on Friday for Doris Betty Starn, 85, of Aptos. The former Hughson woman died Feb. 28, 2010 at her home.

Santa Cruz Memorial-Mission Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Born Aug. 17, 1924 to Danish-born parents, Katrina and Emil Marcher, Doris was raised on a ranch near Waterford with her brothers Vernon "Bum" and Clarence "Bob" Marcher. While in elementary school, Doris moved to Hughson, where she met her husband Donald L. Starn. They attended Hughson High School and graduated together in 1942. They married in 1942 and were married for 56 years and produced five children, Steven Starn, Mark Starn, Gary Starn, Michael Starn and Kristi Starn. In 1964, the family moved to Scotts Valley. Doris was a waitress, a Census Bureau worker, childcare provider and was a long time employee for Whitings Foods at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Mrs. Starn enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an excellent cook, and enjoyed making traditional Danish foods. She enjoyed living by the ocean and the beautiful Santa Cruz coast.

Doris leaves behind her children, Steven Starn of Modesto, and Kristi Starn of La Selva Beach; and 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, all of California. She was preceded in death by sons, Michael, Gary and Mark and husband, Don, to diabetes..
