Dorothy Dorman

A funeral service was held Friday at Lakewood Funeral Home for Dorothy Richard Dorman, 98, of Ceres. She died peacefully on Sept. 30 2010 at her home.

Born Aug. 19 1912 in Seventy Six, Mo., on the banks of the Mississippi River, Dorothy attended elementary and secondary school at Brazeau, Mo., and high school at St. Genevieve, Mo. After graduating she earned her registered nurse degree in 1933 at St. Luke's School of Nursing in St Louis. Mrs. Dorman worked in St. Louis as a nurse until 1940 when she moved to San Francisco, and enlisted in the U.S. Army Medical Corps as a first lieutenant. While serving in the Army during World War II she met first Lt., John E. Dorman and in March of 1943 they were married in Santa Barbara. Dorothy served in the Army until the end of the war and in 1945 was honorably discharged as a captain. In 1946 Dorothy gave birth to her first child, Diana, who was followed by sons, John and Richard. In 1950 Dorothy moved to Ceres and lived in the same house until she passed away. Dorothy worked as a nurse at Memorial Hospital Ceres from 1959 until her retirement in 1976.

She leaves behind her three children, Diana Dorman, John E. Dorman and Richard H. Dorman; her step-daughter, Barbara Knight; her sister, Marion; her granddaughter, Diana R. Dorman; and four step-grandchildren, Chantel, Jennifer, Colleen and Justin Salas. She was preceded in death by husband John Edwards Dorman.
