A memorial service was held Saturday at the Walker Community Center in Walker for Earl M. Schmidt, 88, of Topaz. The former Ceres resident died March 17, 2008 at his daughter's South Lake Tahoe home.

Earl Schmidt was born Dec. 1, 1919 to Henry and Frieda Schmidt as the seventh of nine children and lived on farms in Spencer and Osmond, Neb. In 1934 he moved with his family to California. Mr. Schmidt was a radio operator in the Army Air Corp during World War II and was stationed in India. He was a carpenter by trade and a partner in Howell and Schmidt Construction until he retired in 1978. He built many commercial and industrial buildings in the Modesto area. Mr. Schmidt lived in Ceres for 41 years before moving to Topaz in 1986. He was an avid reader, and an outdoorsman who loved to fish, camp and explore the back roads of California and Nevada.

He leaves behind his children, Susan Ward of South Lake Tahoe, David Schmidt of Ceres, and James Schmidt of Modesto; seven grandchildren, Christine Schmidt, Nicole Vinson, Brian Schmidt, Garrett Schmidt, Megan Hood, Alexis Ward and Rachael Ward; two great-granddaughters, Andrea Schmidt and Rebecca Barnard. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Mabel Schmidt, and son Michael Schmidt.
