Ellen Joy Shook

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Auburn Presbyterian Church, 13025 Bell Air Dr., Auburn, for Ellen Joy Shook, 89, of Auburn. She died July 22, 2011 of pancreatic cancer at her home while being cared for by family members.

Born April 18, 1922 to Hettie E. and J. Orval Snider in Valley, Wash., Ellen was the youngest of four children. She attended grammer schools in Keyes and Turlock, and graduated from Escalon High School in 1940. She was married for 69 years to Merlin A. Shook, who preceded her in death Nov. 28, 2010. Ellen worked for J.C. Penney Co., then was supervisor of Admissions & Records at Modesto Junior College for 22 years. Mrs. Shook was active in Modesto Church of the Brethren as organist and choir member for many years. She enjoyed church, family, travel and a lifetime passion for music. Ellen lived 35 years in Modesto and retired to Auburn the past 20 years.

She leaves behind her children, Barbara Tooker of Boca Raton, Fla., Jim Shook of Palo Alto, and Stan Shook of Auburn; and seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Remembrances may be sent to Modesto Church of the Brethren, Auburn Presbyterian Church or a favorite charity.
