Services were held Thursday at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church for Esequiel Casas Covarrubias, 83, of Modesto. He died Sept. 15, 2008 at the Alexander Cohen Hospice House surrounded by his family.

Interment was at Lakewood Memorial Park under the direction of Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel.

Born Nov. 15, 1924 in Mexico to Pedro Covarrubias and Martina Casas, Esequiel came to the United States in 1963 through the bracero program. He participated in farmworker rights marches and protests. Mr. Covarrubias became a naturalized citizen on Oct. 18,1982 one of the proudest days of his life. He retired from Ceres High School as a maintenance worker. Mr. Covarrubias loved to go to swap meets to find a good bargain.

He leaves behind his eight children, Gricelda Mendoza, Jose and Maria Elena Mendoza of Mexicali, BD Mexico, Rosie Juara of Patterson, Norah Lujan of Albuquerque, N.M, Nancy Lomeli-Covarrubias of Crows Landing, Zeke Covarrubias of Ripon, Martha Covarrubias of Manteca, Soshie Young of Modesto; and 32 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren, and 21 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by wife Gricelda Covarrubias.
