A service was held Monday at the Colonial Chapel of Franklin & Downs for Frederick Costa, 88, of Modesto. The former Ceres resident died March 6, 2012 at Bethel Home in Modesto.
Burial was at Lakewood Memorial Park.
Born Sept. 14, 1923 in Hickman, Fred lived in Ceres and Modesto his entire life. Fred managed various restaurants/bars his entire working career. He was an avid baseball fan and loved the game. During his high school years at Ceres High School he was the star pitcher and quarterback. His love of the game of baseball took him to Indonesia to teach the children how to play. He also enjoyed his walks with his long time companion Elnora VanWey.
He leaves behind his companion, Elnora VanWey of Modesto; his sons, Fred Costa Jr. of Texas, Jerry Foster of Nevado, Herman Costa of Modesto and Dan Costa of Modesto; his brothers: James "Rocky" Costa of Tuolumne, Don Costa of Turlock and Francis Costa of Ceader Falls, Iowa; his sisters, Dolores Coelho of Turlock; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his siblings Helen Wedel, Evelyn Borges, George Costa, Tony Costa, Lawrence Costa and Louie Costa.
