A mass of Christian burial will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Los Banos for Gabriel Cuevas, 23, of Los Banos. The former Ceres Police Department employee died Friday, June 11, 2004 of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

Visitation from noon to 9 p.m. today at the Cuevas residence, 1534 Cypress Place in Los Banos. A vigil prayer service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, also at 1534 Cypress Place.

Ivers & Alcorn Funeral Home in Merced is in charge of burial at Los Banos Cemetery.

Born Sept. 1, 1980, Mr. Cuevas was a native of Modesto and was a lifelong resident of Los Banos. He was a police officer with the Newman Police Department and also worked at World Savings in Milpitas. He previously worked for the Ceres Police Department and the Merced County Sheriff's Department. A former Police Explorer, he helped revitalize the Newman Police Explorer post. Mr. Cuevas also enjoyed customizing cars.

He leaves behind his companion, Nicki Solis of Ceres; his parents, Manuel and Elva Cuevas of Los Banos; his brother, Manuel Cuevas; and grandparents, Librado Zamora Maldonado, Maria Felicita Aparicio and Pastor Cuevas, all of Mexico. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Trinidad Lemos.
