Services were held Saturday at Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel for Gilbert John Vasquez, 57, of Empire. The former Keyes resident died Oct. 20, 2007.

Born March 8, 1950, Mr. Vasquez was a native of Lindsay where he lived for 14 years, before moving to Keyes. He lived there for several years, for the past 33 years he lived in Empire. Mr. Vasquez received his associate degree from Modesto Junior College. He retired from Stanislaus County Child Welfare Department after 33 years of service. Mr. Vasquez worked for Family Service Agency for 17 years, where he started a youth project called the A Team which helped troubled and disadvantaged youth in Stanislaus County. He was a public speaker at many schools. He enjoyed cooking for others, dancing at Crocodiles, teaching youth, loved fishing, friends and family.

He leaves behind four children, Richard Vasquez, Carlos Vasquez and Michael Vasquez, all of Modesto, and Christina LaCombe of Oakdale; his brothers, David Vasquez, Steven Vasquez, Edward Vasquez; and his sisters, Rosanne Vasquez, Michelle Vasquez and Elaine Emmons of Keyes; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by parents, Gilbert and Rosie Vasquez.
