A memorial Mass was held Monday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Hughson for Ida McCarthy, 83, of Hughson. She died Feb. 19, 2008 at the Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson.

A reception was held at Samaritan Village.

Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Born Jan. 27, 1925 in West New York, N.J., to Paul Ignazio and Cecilia Caputi, Mrs. McCarthy helped her husband run their Westport area farm for over 50 years. She enjoyed working in the fabric department of a local store and sometimes worked as a teacher's aide at Westport School. Mrs. McCarthy was known as an excellent seamstress who donated talents to the Altar Society and Ladies Guild at St. Jude's Catholic Church in Ceres, making everything from quilts to vestments. She was exceptional cook. Later as a resident of Samaritan Village in Hughson, Mrs. McCarthy was known for her humble, gentle way with people. She was deeply religious and enjoyed saying the rosary and attending Mass at St. Anthony's.

She leaves behind her children, Kate McCarthy of Modesto, Edward McCarthy of Auburn and Tom McCarthy of Colorado; her brother, Mario Caputi of Modesto; and her grandchildren, Jennifer McCarthy of Vacaville, and Anika McCarthy- Belash of Modesto, Andrew McCarthy of Reno, and Michael McCarthy of Hollywood. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene J. McCarthy, and her sons Paul and Jeff McCarthy.
