A memorial service was held Saturday at Lakewood Funeral Home for Jack Gilbert Davis, 81, of Modesto. He died Aug. 19, 2010.

Born Nov. 29 1928 in Mission, Hidalgo County, Texas, Jack served in the U.S. Merchant Marine and in the Navy from March 13, 1950 to Dec. 22, 1953, during the Korean Conflict. After the service, Jack went to college on the G.I. Bill. He earned his bachelor's degree in Business Administration at San Jose State College and his master's degree at University of the Pacific in Stockton. Upon graduating with his bachelor's degree, Mr. Davis went to work for Owens Illinois Glass Company in San Francisco. Later he returned to Modesto to go into business.

After the business venture, Jack started substitute teaching in 1960. In 1961, was hired as an English teacher at Downey High School in Modesto. He also worked for the Modesto City Schools as a counselor work experience coordinator, vice principal, and Community Service Officer. Then he joined the Ceres Unified School District as principal of Mae Hensley Junior High School, then became personnel director in September, 1990. After retiring, Jack continued to work part-time consulting for Jefferson School District in Tracy and Jamestown Unified School District. Later he worked part time as a counselor at Downey High School, and retired in the mid 1990s.

He leaves behind his wife, Jean Maddux Davis of Modesto; his children, Dianne K. Davis, and Marc P. Davis; and two grandchildren, Alex Davis and Claudia Davis.
