A graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella for James "Jim" R. Thomas, 78, of Ceres. He died Saturday, May 1, 2004 at Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock.

Allen Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Born Feb. 15, 1926, Mr. Thomas was a native of Montana and had lived in Ceres since 1976. He previously lived in Modesto from 1960 to 1976, and Yreka. Mr. Thomas worked for Modesto Auto Parts for 16 years. He was an Army veteran and served from 1944 to 1946. Mr. Thomas belonged to the Modesto American Legion Post 74 and the Turlock Model Airplane Club.

He leaves behind two stepchildren, Andrea Fox of Yuba City and Ed Tanner; and six stepgrandchildren, six stepgreat-grandchildren and four stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
