Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 25 at Valley Christian Center in Ceres for Jay McGuffey, 70, of Neosho, Mo. He died on July 12, 2009 in Hughson after battling cancer. A reception will follow in the Family Center.

Born May 5, 1939 to James C. and Bessie McGuffe in Berrien Springs, Mich., Jay attended schools in Newman, Gustine, Crows Landing, and Sonora, and attended Modesto High School. He met Barbara Smith at Airport Assembly of God Church in Modesto, and they were married July 23, 1960. Mr. McGuffey worked at different companies in the Valley including Tillie Lewis is Modesto, Del Monte in Sacramento, Modesto Janitorial, and Norris Industries in Riverbank. He worked the drywall industry for Doyle's Drywall, San Joaquin Drywall and retired from Western Drywall in Salida. Mr. McGuffey was a member of San Joaquin County Painters Local #1115.

One of Jay's favorite pastimes was working in youth ministry at Keyes Assembly of God and Valley Christian Center. He spent several years as a commander of the Royal Rangers at Keyes Assembly of God, of which both his sons were members.

After having lived many years in Modesto and Ceres, Jay moved to Neosho in February, 2007.

He leaves behind his wife of 48 years, Barbara McGuffey of Neosho, Mo.; three children, Steve McGuffey of Modesto, James McGuffey of Mariposa and Lore Houston of Modesto; six grandchildren, Tony Hoeflicker of Washington, Janee' McGuffey of Ceres, Corissa LeMire of Oakhurst, Kyle LeMire of Mariposa, Bryce Manor of Modesto, and Jayden Houston of Modesto; and one great-grandchild, Christian McGuffey of Ceres.

Remembrances may be sent to the Alexander Cohen Hospice House, 7700 Fox Rd., Hughson, CA 95326; or to a favoirte local Hospice organization, including Community Hospice 4768 Spyres Way, Modesto CA 95356.
