A funeral was held Friday at LaLoma Grace Brethren Church for John Edward Cripe, 79, of Merced. The former Ceres educator died Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto.

A memorial service was also held Monday at the First Baptist Church in Merced.

Burial was at Wood Colony Cemetery in Modesto under the direction of Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel.

Born Dec. 1, 1925, Mr. Cripe was a native of Rio Oso and lived in Merced for 48 years and previously lived in Modesto for eight years. He was an educator and school administrator for 40 years, and taught at Stanislaus Union School, Ceres elementary schools and Merced City Schools. He graduated from Westmont College and the University of the Pacific in Stockton. Mr. Cripe was a member of the First Baptist Church of Merced, Merced Lions Club and Merced County Genealogy Society, and enjoyed fishing, camping, travel and reading.

He leaves behind his wife, Syvilla Ann Cripe of Merced; two sons, Daniel Edward Cripe of Antelope and David William Cripe of Lake Forest; four brothers, Carl E. Cripe and Donald O. Cripe, both of Modesto, D. Earl Cripe of Sonora and C. Richard Cripe of Denair; four sisters, Charlotte A. Peck and Erma M. Jones, both of Modesto, Dorothy J. Cypert of Lodi and Esther M. Douglas of Chico; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
