A chapel service will be held at 10 a.m. today at Lakewood Funeral Home in Hughson for John Maire Fernandes Jr., 84, of Hughson. He died May 12, 2010.
Born Nov. 24, 1925 in New Bedford, Mass., John's family moved him to Arcata when he was 6 months. In 1937, the family moved to Hughson where he lived out his entire life. He owned and operated a small dairy while working for Gallo Winery, where he met his wife Judy. Mr. Fernandes was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hughson.
He leaves behind his three children, David Fernandes and Sheri Oneto, both of California. and Katherine Reid of Nevada; his sister, Velmina Uris; two brothers, Arnold and Al Fernandes; grandchildren Kristy Oneto and Tammy Mitts, Karla Fernandes, Dave Fernandes, and Theresa Fernandes; a step-daughter, Cynthia Taylor of Arizona; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Judy on March 19, 2006, sister Rosie, and parents John Senior and Clementina Fernandes.
