A funeral service was held Monday at Calvary Baptist Church in Modesto for John Van Tuyl, 45, of Ceres. He died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004 at his home.

Eaton Family Funeral Home was in charge of burial at Lakewood Memorial Park.

Born Dec. 14, 1958, Mr. Van Tuyl was a native of Arcadia and lived in Stanislaus County for 27 years. He was a metal worker. Mr. Van Tuyl was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Modesto where he taught Sunday School. He also instructed black belt judo and competed in Olympic style weightlifting.

He leaves behind three sons, Phillip Van Tuyl and David Van Tuyl, both of New Mexico, and Will Van Tuyl of Redding; his parents, Don and Clella Van Tuyl of Ceres; two brothers, David Van Tuyl of Sacramento and Stephen Van Tuyl; and his sister, Mary Sadd of Nebraska.
