A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 3 at the McHenry Chapel of Franklin and Downs for area couple Johnny Ray Vernon Jr., 47, and his wife, Gail Lynn Vernon, 46. They died June 23, 2008 in a motorcycle accident.

A Celebration of Life will be held after the memorial at the Moose Lodge, 821 5th Street, Modesto.

Born May 30, 1961, J.R. was born and raised in Modesto. He began his roofing career in 1970 at Vernon's Roofing in Hughson. He was last employed by King's Roofing. J.R. was also president of Men's Auxiliary of V.F.W. Post #3199 of Modesto. He was a 20 year member of E. Clampus Vitus.

The couple met 31 years ago.

They leave behind their children, Charles Matthew Terry, Sherry Rae Vernon, and Johnny Ray Vernon Jr.; and five grandchildren, Kayla Terry, Anthony Camara, Ashley Terry, Ely Corea, and Isabel Terry, all of Modesto.

He leaves behind his brothers, Terry Vernon, Eric Vernon, Gary Cooksey, Larry Newnam, and Jesse Miranda; his sisters, Linda Vernon and Cindy Davis; and his parents, John Vernon of Modesto, Ruby Vernon of Modesto, and Gale Vernon of Crescent City.

Gail Lynn Vernon was born Sept. 13, 1961 in Modesto where she was also raised. She was a devoted housewife and mom, not only to her children, but to any child in need. She was also a survivor of a brain aneurism two and a half years ago.

Besides her children she leaves behind her brother, Bobby Terry; and two sisters, Lisa Newnam and Kat Miranda.
