A Celebration Of Life was held Friday at First Calvary Assembly of God in Hilmar for LaVerne Mae Klassen, 81, of Hilmar. She died Aug. 16, 2008.

Allen Mortuary was in charge of burial at Turlock Memorial Park.

Born in June 1927, Mrs. Klassen was a native of Lodi. Her parents, Henry and Martha Feuerstein, brought her to Stanislaus County while young. LaVerne attended Gratton Elementary School and Hughson High School. She was employed at Don Pedro Hardware (Turner's) for many years. She also managed Honeycomb Bakery on W. Main Street in Turlock until her retirement. Mrs. Klassen was known for her beautiful and professional decorating of wedding and special event cakes. LaVerne married Elliott Klassen in 1945 and recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. She lived in Hilmar for 58 years.

LaVerne was a member of Bethel Temple in Turlock where she played violin in the orchestra and sang in the choir. She was also the president of the local Women's Aglow Fellowship. She most recently attended Calvary First Assembly of God in Hilmar. In her younger years she was a youth director at Full Gospel Tabernacle. LaVerne enjoyed bowling, traveling in their RV and fishing.

She leaves behind her husband, Elliott Klassen of Hilmar; her daughter, Sharon Manke of Sacramento; three brothers, Lloyd Feuerstein of Citrus Heights, Henry Feuerstein of Idaho and Martin Feuerstein of Oklahoma; her grandchildren, Julie Riggs of Roseville and Timothy Manke of Sacramento; and her great-grandchildren, Alissa, Elliott and Samuel Riggs of Roseville and Bridget Manke of Sacramento.
