A memorial service was held Friday at Valley Christian Center in Ceres for Leroy Dwane Sterling, 70, of Denair. He died August 1, 2009 in Turlock.

Turlock Memorial Park & Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Born May 5, 1939, Mr. Sterling was a native of Heavner, Okla., born to Vera and Walter Sterling.He attended high school in Delano. In 1956 Leroy joined the Army, and was stationed in Japan. In 1960 he moved to Modesto where he met his wife, Florine. They were happily married for 47 years. He retired from James Rivers Paper Plant where he had worked for 33 years. Leroy was a veteran who enjoyed wood carving, hunting, camping, traveling and collecting knives. He was most passionate about reading the word of God. Mr. Sterling was a member of Valley Christian Center in Ceres where he served on the board for many years.

He leaves behind wife Florine Sterling of Denair; three children, Gail Lambert of Ceres, Cammie Melton of Denair, and Matt Sterling of Modesto; his sister, Corena Boren of Modesto. six grandchildren, Blakley Lambert, Meg Lambert, Jennifer Sawders, Natalie Melton, James Melton, Walter Sterling and Robert Muller; and one great-grandchild Jazzlyn Rose. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Billy Sterling and Kenneth Sterling.
