A memorial service was held Saturday at Turlock Funeral Home for Lorraine Almeling, 83, of Hughson. She died on June 24, 2008 in Turlock.
Interment was at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona.
Born Nov. 10, 1924 in St. Louis, Mo., to Herbert and Mathilda Blatz, Lorraine graduated from St. Anthony's School for Girls where she attended grade and high school. After graduation, she taught school for one year in New Melle, Mo. She then married Air Force Lt. Maynard William Almeling of Wentzville, Mo., in January 1946. The mother of two children, Lorraine and family lived in Jennings, Mo., before moving for two years to Randolph Field, Texas, where her husband Maynard served as a radar bombardier instructor during the Korean War. After the family's return to St. Louis, the Almelings settled in Florissant, Mo., where they lived until Maynard, then a general plant manager for Continental Baking Co., was transferred to Chicago in 1970. Lorraine worked as executive secretary to a senior vice president in the home office of Allstate Insurance Co., in Northbrook, Ill., for 16 years. After retirement in 1986, Lorraine and Maynard moved to Fountain of the Sun (FOS) retirement community in Mesa, Ariz. Maynard died in 1990. Lorraine enjoyed golfing, acting in FOS's Little Theatre Group, traveling the world to see her children and grandchildren, attending cultural events and watching sports, especially tennis. In November 2006, Lorraine became a resident of Samaritan Village in Hughson.
She leaves behind her two children, Sandra Schultes of Turlock and Guy Almeling of Bonita Springs, Fla.; and five grandchildren, Cynthia Schultes, Rene Almeling Ostergren, David Almeling, all of San Francisco, Carolyn (Schultes) Della Maggiore of San Jose and Christine (Schultes) Alvarado; and great-grandsons Logan Alvarado and Luke Alvarado, both of Scottsdale, Ariz.
