Loyd Davenport

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Lakewood Memorial Park for Loyd Davenport, 86, of Hughson. He died Sept. 23, 2010.

Born Feb. 1, 1924 in Indianola, Okla., to Sam and Ola Davenport, Loyd was the fifth of eight children. He served in the U.S. Navy, where he served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II from 1944-46. After being discharged in 1946, he moved to California, where he met and married Geneva Spears. They lived in Hughson where they raised four children. Loyd attended First Baptist Church in Hughson, where he was baptized at the age of 77. He was a member of the Oakdale Saddle Club, the American Legion and the VFW. He also enjoyed working with his horses. He and his favorite horse, Pal, were fixtures at parades across the region.

He leaves behind his children, Janet DeBoard of Hughson, Dale Davenport of Modesto and Danny Davenport of Nashville, Tenn.; his brother, Sammy Davenport of McAlester, Okla.; his grandchildren, Marlon Burgess, Mace Burgess, William DeBoard, Heather Ayala, Christina Young, Carrie Davenport, Kellie Davenport and Melissa Davenport; and eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Geneva, and his oldest daughter, Margie.

Remembrances may be sent to a favorite charity.
