A memorial service was held Sunday at the Episcopal Church of St. John the Baptist in Capitola for Marian Mensinger Rodgers, 93, of Saratoga. The former Shackelford Elementary School teacher died April 30, 2004.
The Paul Mortuary in Pacific Grove was in charge of interment at El Carmelo Cemetery, Pacific Grove. Santa Cruz Memorial Chapel in charge of cremation.
Born Nov. 3, 1910, Mrs. Rodgers was a native of Modesto. She graduated from Modesto High School and Modesto Junior College. After earning her bachelor's degree in English from Mills College in 1933, Mrs. Rodgers taught elementary school at Lone Tree School from 1933-34, and then later at Shackelford Elementary School in South Modesto and then in Los Angeles. Her work with music program earned her honors.
She lived in the Bay Area and worked in the lending library in the White House Department Store and returned to Modesto for two years before moving to Long Island for a year. With her first husband, she was proprietor of a motel in Sacramento for four years. She returned again to Modesto for 10 years.
In the mid-1960s, the Rodgers moved to Carmel where they managed motels on the Monterey Peninsula. She moved to Santa Cruz in 1993 and had been living in a Saratoga nursing home since 1998. She enjoyed oil painting, Chinese brush painting and Ikebana.
Mrs. Rodgers leaves behind her daughter, Julie Fudge of Los Gatos; her brother, John Mensinger of Modesto; and one grandchild, three stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands, C. Ray Bryant and Edward E. Rodgers; five brothers; and two sisters.
