A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Samaritan Village Chapel in Hughson for Marie D. Lemos Alves, 86, of Hughson. She died of natural causes on Monday, August 15, 2005 at Samaritan Village.

There is no public visitation. Burial is planned at Lakewood Memorial Park right after the chapel service.

The Colonial Chapel of Franklin & Downs is in charge of arrangements.

Born Sept. 28, 1918, Mrs. Alves was a native of Gridley, spent time in Modesto but grew up in Hughson, where she lived the rest of her life. With her husband Lionel she helped farm in east Modesto and later in Hughson. She was a homemaker loved to bake, can and cook. Mrs. Alves also enjoyed camping and traveling and belonged to the Good Sams Club and Peachy Sams Group, an RV trailer group.

She leaves behind two children, Ron Alves of Oakdale and Janet Madrid of Salt Lake City, Utah; four sisters, Hazel Silva of Oakdale, and Josephine Hayes, Lucille Sanders and Irene Sanders, all of Modesto; and five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lionel Alves; two brothers and two sisters.
