A graveside service was held Friday morning at Ceres Memorial Park for Melinda Canaynay Balay, 72, of Modesto. She died Monday, Dec. 19, 2005at Doctors Medical Center.

A Mass was at St. Jude's Catholic Church, Ceres on Friday.

Cunningham's Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Born March 16, 1933, Mrs. Balay was a native of Imus, Philippines, and lived in Modesto for 13 years and previously lived in Long Beach seven years, Hawaii three years and the Philippines 49 years. Mrs. Balay was a registered nurse in the Philippines for 13 years. She was a member of St. Jude's Catholic Church, Ceres. Mrs. Balay enjoyed reading Alfred Hitchcock mystery books and cooking.

She leaves behind four children, Maria Victoria Melendez and Emil Balay, both of Modesto, and Barney Balay and Dennis Balay, both of Ceres; three brothers, Enrique Canaynay of Florida, and Jose Canaynay and Eduardo Canaynay, both of the Philippines; two sisters, Julie Poblete of Florida and Ligaya Navasero of the Philippines; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emiliano Balay.
