A funeral was held on Monday at Turlock Funeral Home for Melvin William Reiswig, 95, of Modesto. He died peacefully on March 22, 2011 at Stratford at Beyer Park where he had resided for the last six months.
Burial was at Turlock Memorial Park.
Born July 3, 1915 in Boden, N.D., to Charlie and Maggie Reiswig, Melvin was one of nine children. He grew up on farms in North Dakota and South Dakota. At age 19, Melvin came out to California where he settled near Lodi and worked as a mechanic, drove truck and worked on numerous ranches. He was drafted into the Army and spent a year in New Guinea. In 1946, Mr. Reiswig married Genevieve Damas and they later moved to Hughson where they started a dairy. In 1955 they moved their dairy to Turlock where they had a dairy farm together for 40 years. Melvin was a member of the Stanislaus County Holstein Breeders, East-West Dairymen Association (where he was president for many years), a life member of VFW Post #5059, American Legion and was commander of Hughson VFW Post for many years until it disbanded.
He leaves behind his current wife of 10 years, Eleanor Reiswig of Turlock; his children, Diane Verissimo of Modesto, and David Reiswig of Ceres; three brothers, Wilbert Reiswig of Lodi, Arnie Reiswig of Texas, and Darvin Reiswig of Oregon; his sister, Doris Dosier of Stockton; five grandchildren, Matthew Reiswig of St. Paul, Minn., Jennifer Triplett and Sherri Verissimo, both of Redondo Beach, Heather Reiswig of St. Paul, Minn., and Melinda Verissimo of Huntington Beach; and two great-grandsons, Peter Matthew and Leo Robert Reiswig of St. Paul, Minn. He was preceded in death by parents Charlie and Maggie Reiswig, brothers Ed and Bert Reiswig, sisters Hattie Fischer and Selma Johnson, daughter Gloria Trintini, grandson Mark William Reiswig and his wife of 48 years Genevieve Reiswig.
