A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 16 at the home of Dave and Gina Vance, Wellsford Road, Modesto, for Michael Dean Vance, 59, of Bluemont, Va. He died Sept. 8, 2005 at a hospice care center.

Enders & Shirley Funeral Home & Crematory in Berryville, Va., is in charge of arrangements.

Born June 3, 1946, Mr. Vance was a native of Modesto and lived in Bluemont more than 10 years. He attended Keyes Grammar School, Turlock High School and Modesto Junior College. He had retired after a 22-year career in the Coast Guard. Mr. Vance was a search and rescue helicopter pilot, based in Pensacola, Fla. In 1974, he received an Air Medal and Presidential Citation for flying in near-zero visibility to rescue an injured seaman. After leaving the Coast Guard, he worked for Gulfstream Aerospace and Canada Air.

He leaves behind his wife, Sigrid Vance of Bluemont; his stepson, Ray Pollari of Bellevue, Wash.; his mother, Leola Vance of Modesto; brother, Dave Vance of Modesto; and his sister, Nancy Calvillo of San Jose.
