A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. today (Wednesday) at the Ceres Chapel of Franklin & Downs for Raymond Henry O'Neal, 71, of Ceres. He died Oct. 11, 2008 at his home after a lengthy illness.

Burial will take place at Ceres Memorial Park.

Born Feb. 14, 1937, Mr. O'Neal was a native of Dennison, Texas. He served in the Marines and was stationed in Japan. Raymond lived in Morgan Hill before moving to Modesto in 1978. He lived in Ceres since 1982. Mr. O'Neal was an auto technician, mostly self-employed. He enjoyed playing baseball and golf and was fond of being with his grandchildren. Mr. O'Neal particularly enjoyed organizing and attending family reunions, a tradition he started in 1978.

He leaves behind his wife of 49 years, Gwen O'Neal of Ceres; four children, Nancy Lincoln of Cloverdale, Kathleen O'Neal of Turlock, and Hank O'Neal and Kelly Beal, both of Modesto; two brothers, John O'Neal of Mountain Ranch and Kenneth O'Neal of Bakersfield; three sisters, Laverne Absher of Bakersfield, Ruth Hunter of Yuba City and Lillian Peters of Ridgecrest; six grandchildren, Jennifer Lincoln of Santa Rosa, Nathan Avena of Turlock, Tina Christopher of Vacaville, Melissa Niemeyer of Salida, and Amanda Avena and Aaron Avena, both of Gilroy; and nine great-grandchildren.
