A Celebration of Life will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday Aug. 11 for Richard Charles Smith, 46, of Ceres. He died July 24, 2012.

Born Aug. 2, 1965, Richard lived in Ceres for over 20 years. He was a diesel mechanic who was pursuing a career as a substance abuse counselor. He was a very active volunteer in programs such as Stanislaus Recovery Center, Shelter Cove and Celebrate Recovery. Mr. Smith was a mentor, a sponsor and a helping hand to many in need, donating thousands of tireless hours earning him several awards from the state of California. He was a long-time member and usher at Ceres Christian Church, and always willingness to share the joy of his salvation.

He leaves behind his children, Thomas Justin Melching, Samantha Nichole Melching and Cassandra Joy Melching; his parents, Charles Edward and Eva Mae Smith; and two sisters, Debbie Sweis and Sandi Van Der Woude.
