A private celebration of life was held among family and close relations of Sami Paul Assad, 74, of Modesto. He died April 4, 2008 after a brief illness.

Born May 26, 1933, Mr. Assad was a native of Jerusalem, Palestine, born to Jeries and Adele Assad. The Assads came to America in 1951. Sami graduated from Modesto High School, had served in the U.S. Air Force in Kansas and London, England. He studied journalism at San Francisco State and later received his teaching credential from California State University, Stanislaus. He taught at Keyes Elementary School for 25 years. He enjoyed golfing and had a strong appreciation for music and film. Mr. Assad touched many lives of students, co-workers and friends and seem to make an impression on all who encountered him.

He leaves behind his two children, Paul Assad and Diane McElroy of Port Orchard, Wash.; his brother, William Assad of Manteca; three sisters Ellie Bliven, Evelyn Gardner and Ida Austin; and two granddaughters.
