A memorial service was held Friday at Hughson Methodist Church for Sharon Linn Serpa, 71, of Turlock. She died Aug. 30, 2007 at Turlock Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born Oct. 24, 1935, Mrs. Serpa was a native of Ottawa, Ill., and moved to Turlock along with her family, when she was in the third grade. She attended Turlock schools and later graduated from Hughson High School. She owned and operated Center Beauty Salon in Hughson for 20 years after working at several salons in Turlock. After selling her shop, she went to work for Turlock Flower Shop where she worked for many years. She also was a bookeeper out of her home.

Mrs. Serpa enjoyed playing bridge and was a bridge instructor and a match point enthusiast. She also enjoyed pinochle, dominoes and board games with family and friends. Sharon loved to gamble and was luck at blackjack and the horses. Reno, Lake Tahoe, Topaz Lake and Yosemite were favorite vacation spots.

When her children were young, Sharon was active in many community organizations, including the Turlock Cavaliers Drill Team. She was a past president of the Hughson 20th Century Club, was a Hughson 4-H leader, and was a Hughson Swim Team "mom" for 15 years. She also entertained the residents of Bel Air Lodge on a weekly basis for years in a Ragtime band.

Sharon was known for her 1963 Silver Thunderbird with the license plate Granny S.

She leaves behind her children, Greg Serpa and Jahn Serpa; and her grandson, Brian Wallace. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Alvin Serpa, who passed away on May 10, 2007; her parents, Everett and Violet Mayou; and sister Donna Lee Pittman.
