A graveside service was held Friday at Lakewood Memorial Park for Vernon Eugene Brooks, 82, of Modesto. He died Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 2007.

Born May 25, 1925 to Carol Virginia Helsley and Harold Leslie Brooks, Vernon attended Ceres Elementary School, Roosevelt Junior High in Modesto and graduated from Modesto High School in 1943. He joined the U.S. Air Corps in 1943 and was discharged in 1945. Mr. Brooks then attended Modesto Junior College and graduated from San Jose State College in 1949 with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration. In 1948 he married Virginia Curran.

Mr. Brooks worked for Shell Oil Company in Sacramento for nine years before moving back to Modesto in 1960 to go to work for Circle A-W Manufacturing as an accountant and then general manager. He retired from Circle A-W in 1985. Mr. Broks was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Ben Franklin Electric Club, Spring Creek Golf Club, Elks Lodge and St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

He leaves behind his wife, Virginia Brooks of Modesto; his two sons, Greg Brooks of Sacramento and Rob Brooks of Concord; his brother, Edward Brooks; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by older brother Leslie Brooks.
