A funeral service was held Tuesday at Lakewood Funeral Home for Wilma Jean "Jeannie" Mayo, 79, of Hughson. She died Aug. 8, 2007.

Born Aug. 8, 1928, Mrs. Vaughn was born to Ella and Orville Vaughn in Purcell, Okla. She grew up in the Washington/Purcell areas of Oklahoma. She married her husband O.G. Mayo in 1946. The couple moved to California and settled in Hughson in 1948.

Jeannie drove a school bus for Keyes Elementary School for 10 years from 1963 to 1973. At that time she returned to school to pursue her nursing degree at Modesto Junior College. She worked for 12 of the happiest years of her life at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto until suffering a stroke that forced her to retire.

She enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping, and when her family was younger, serving as a 4-H sewing leader and driving numerous kids to and from, and sitting through countless little league and high school baseball and football games.

She leaves behind her husband of 60 years, O.G. Mayo of Hughson; her daughter, Robin Lopez of Turlock; her brother, Sonny Vaughn of Wayne, Okla.; her sister, Patsy Branam of Purcell, Okla.; two grandchildren, Richelle Bean of Empire and Erik Morris of Hughson; three step-granddaughters, Leanna Holloway of Ceres, Christina Lopez of San Lorenzo and Jessica Lopez of Turlock; and numerous nieces and nephews.
