James and Mildred Krause celebrated 64 years of marriage on June 18.

The Ceres couple celebrated their milestone anniversary quietly in their Boothe Road house, which has been home since April 1966. Jim's ill health - he suffered a devastating stroke in January that has robbed him of the ability to communicate - has been the deciding factor in the couple's present activities. Having taken her wedding wows seriously, Mildred has been Jim's faithful caregiver for several years.

The couple met in Mr. Graham's World Problems class while attending Ceres High School in 1948. Jim had returned to school after serving 18 months in the Marine Corps to continue his education. Mildred was a senior and shortly after graduation they traveled to Reno, Nev., for a wedding.

"He was a big old tease," said Mildred, who recalled how Jim would swipe her books which doubled as her filing cabinet for papers. "I would say, 'Give my book back,' and he would give it back one page at a time. I couldn't stand him."

The marriage produced four children - Michael of Madera, Edward Krause of Modesto, Daniel Krause of Ceres and Cynthia Krause of Salem, Ore. They have four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

James supported his family during 44 years of work at Merchants Refrigerating Co. Mildred was a licensed vocational nurse employed by an obstetrician and gynecologist group in Modesto.

In their retirement years, Jim and Mildred enjoyed traveling in their motor home to places like Canada, the Grand Canyon and Branson, Mo. Their lives changed when Jim suffered a stroke on an RV trip to Clear Lake in 1991.
