Ceres High School's varsity wrestling team won eight of 14 matches during its 45-31 triumph over host Summerville in a non-league dual meet on Tuesday, Dec. 15.

The Bulldogs avenged their 2008 loss to the Bears.

"They whooped us last year," Ceres High assistant coach Steve Festa said. "They were expecting to do the same thing this season."

The Bulldogs got wins from Wesley Schwieger, Curtis Hulstine, Keegan Overbey, Nick Moran, Jordan Apodoca, Tony Spinella, Christian Moore and Gabe Balderas.

Schwieger won via third-round pin (5:34) over Chris Vallelunga in the 112-pound division.

Spinella collected a technical-fall victory (15-0) against Josh Dunlap at 160 pounds.

Christian Moore earned a major decision (15-4) over Jessey Stoy at 171 pounds.

Gabe Balderas won by forfeit at 103 pounds.

Brandon Christeson lost by decision (7-3) to Chris Martin at 119 pounds.

Christian Rodriguez lost by major decision (11-0) to Carson Gracia at 152 pounds.

Erik Eisenbeis (189, 1:09), Lucas Silva (215, 1:04) and Ruben Sanchez (285, 1:59) all lost by pin.

Summerville's Brady Day won by forfeit at 125 pounds.

"A lot of the kids stepped up," Festa said.

Hulstine, Overbey, Moran and Apodoca helped Ceres High build a commanding 36-9 lead with six matches remaining.

"We kept racking up points," Curtis said. "It was very surprising."

The Bulldogs held on for the victory against the Bears.

"They were picked to win their league," Festa said. "We were impressive. When you work hard, you get those results."

Ceres High will travel to Oakdale today for its first Valley Oak League tri-meet. The Bulldogs will face the Mustangs and Sierra Timberwolves.
